It may still be too soon to talk about silver linings where the pandemic is concerned but here we are, and may first home buyers rejoice. There’s nothing like a global pandemic to propel you into the grown-up zone and decide to buy your first home - and both state and Federal governments have come to the party to help you get there faster. It’s true that property prices are out of reach in some areas, but there are still options across the country for those with a flexible approach and willing to do the research. Forecasters are predicting considerable growth by the end of 2021, so taking advantages of the incentives being offered means many could get in now at an affordable price, not accessible without that little bit of help. The First Home Loan Deposit Scheme was a great initiative when launched in January 2020 and its success meant an additional 10,000 places were added to the scheme last year. This changed the game for many, requiring just 5% deposit for scheme entry. Further savings are available with a number of states putting stamp duty concessions and exemptions in place. First Home Buyer grants have been sustained and, in some cases, upgraded Australia wide. (Eligibility and conditions vary from state to state – see firsthome.gov.au for details.)
